During 2002 -04, Sue Lee, participated in exhibitions and art festivals throughout South Korea. and met Sonia S. Hahn, Korean artist . They struck a friendship, committing to undertake a joint project together to build bridges between their cultures. Thus, the Provincial Spirit Apron Project, an empathetic arts and cultural exchange, was conceived.
Back in Australia, Sue together with fellow artists Corrie Wright and Di Collier (Creative Mobility), coordinated the apron project, inviting artists to create apron artworks. At the same time the Korean participants, coordinated by Sonia S. Hahn, Woni & Lee Kyung Mi, were busy making their own aprons. The result is a spectacular range of aprons made from materials as diverse as corrugated iron, plastic spoons and hand-dyed felt.
The provincial spirit Apron Project has since journeyed to Korea, Australia and is now in Canada at the invitation of Canadian artist Donna Morrison who is coordinating and curating the project there. Penny Thompson, an Australian artist living in Korea, made the journey to Canada to participate and has documented one of the apron exhibitions.
